Combating menstrual exile in Nepal

Chhaupadi is practice of menstrual exile is widespread in Western Nepal. Those who are menstruating are considered “impure” for the duration of their period. They are excluded from social life, from school, and forced to live separately.

Our projects combatting chhaupadi are part of our commitment to tackle period poverty — the lack of access to menstruation products, hygiene facilities and women’s and menstrual health information.

On the road this Fall and coming to a sangha near you

This Fall the Karuna Team will be ‘on the road’ and coming to a sangha near you. Throughout October, November and December we’ll be holding events sangha-friendly events that will bring people together to learn about Karuna-USA and what we are building.

We plan to be in New York, New Jersey, Boston, Portsmouth NH and San Francisco, and can easily join your sangha or group in-person or online.

Supporting girls’ & women’s rights to reproductive health in Nepal

A common phenomenon across South Asia is a practice of periodically excluding girls and women from participating in their regular life, with no access to public areas. They are locked out of the house to sleep in stables or shacks. This often leads to hypothermia, respiratory illness, exposure to wild animals and to rape. As a result, maternal and infant mortality are high rates.

Bangladesh is among the top 5 countries with the highest disaster risk, with 140 million people at significant risk to natural hazards. ‘Charlands’ or ‘chars’ are sandbars within river channels or attached to the riverbanks. With our support, displaced and vulnerable char communities are receiving help in the event of flooding or char destruction.
